Sadly the producer of the proposed film featuring Mark Foster and the Lido has made the tough decision not to go ahead with filming this year due to not being able to raise sufficient funds. We’re naturally disappointed, but wish Nicola and her team all the very best for next year and remain as keen as ever to offer help when we can.

Plan to host events at the Lido moves forward
Published on August 1, 2010
One of the ways that FOGL have suggested the Lido could be better used and made available for the wider community is to act as a uniquely interesting venue for concerts, plays, films and other events. With such a vibrant Arts scene in Guildford, we’re pleased to see that in future, the Lido might be able to play a bigger role in hosting things.
Lido Manager, Russell has applied for permission to stage events with a proposal to hire the Lido out for private functions that could involve live music, plays, films and dance events. The Spectrum car park would be used for large events and consultants would be brought in to control the volume of noise coming from the site.
The leader of Guildford Borough Council, Councillor Tony Rooth, said: “We would like the lido to be used as much as possible throughout the year and to improve the choices available for privately-run events and functions”.
Many of the surviving Lidos around the country use their venues for hosting such events, both for community benefit and fundraising. This is a promising step in the right direction for seeing the Lido flourish in the future.

Swim stories
Published on July 25, 2010
We’ve uploaded some new swimming tales from FOGLs, you’ll find them by following the link on the right here.
There’ll be more to come soon, including an account of how the increasing interest and resurgence in the popularity of outdoor swimming is being embraced by Surrey swimmers as over 70 people attended the Big River Jump in the Wey on July 11th in support of the Europe-wide Big Jump campaign to raise awareness of river and water quality across Europe. The event brought together many Lido swimmers, and newly recruited FOGLs in a show of somewhat spontaneous solidarity. It was quite a sight!
End of free swimming for over 60s…but here’s an offer
Published on July 25, 2010
As we probably all know, one of the immediate casualties of the tightening of government spending is the closure at the end of the month of the free swimming programme for the over 60s around the country, which of course affects the Lido.
However, Spectrum management have announced that the over 60s can swim at a concessionary rate of £2.90 or take advantage of a new reduced price season ticket for the remainder of the Lido swimming season at a cost of only £17.50.

Swim Events
Published on July 8, 2010
We know that several FOGLs have been taking part in various organised swimming events this season. We’ve heard from those using the Lido to train for the British Gas Great London and Great East Swims and the inaugural Blue Mile in Plymouth for example. We hope to share some of their experiences in the newsletters and would love to hear from more how they are using and enjoying the Lido this season. It’s great to hear how the Lido plays such an important role in helping people to train for and enjoy their outdoor swimming, for example this from new FOGL Hilary:
“ I have been using the Lido since the beginning of May to train for the British Gas Swim last weekend and it was a godsend as I needed the extra distance and outdoors, having only been used to an indoor and 25m pool”.
Do get in touch, post a comment here or email us direct, all news is very welcome!
Have you told us what you think?

Hot weekend ahead
Published on June 24, 2010
The forecast is looking perfect for the weekend and we want everyone to come along and enjoy the Lido to its max. For those liking a quieter swim than we get on hot busy days, remember that on Friday and Monday mornings the pool’s open from 6.30am – 9am. Get up early, enjoy the Lido’s perfect waters before the crowds flock in and head off to work.
On Saturday and Sunday the pool will be open 10am-6.30pm. The carpark is likely to be very busy, so why not consider coming by train or park up at Spectrum and saunter down to the Lido. Both are within easy walking distance of the pool.
However and whenever you visit the Lido, we hope you have a wonderful, sunny, swimming time.
BBQ cancelled
Published on June 23, 2010
Unfortunately the decision has been made to cancel the BBQ due to a low number of ticket sales. This is disappointing, however, thanks to those who did support the event, and of course refunds for your tickets are available from Lido reception.
