Swim stories

We’ve uploaded some new swimming tales from FOGLs, you’ll find them by following the link on the right here.

There’ll be more to come soon, including an account of how the increasing interest and resurgence in the popularity of outdoor swimming is being embraced by Surrey swimmers as over 70 people attended the Big River Jump in the Wey on July 11th in support of the Europe-wide Big Jump campaign to raise awareness of river and water quality across Europe. The event brought together many Lido swimmers, and newly recruited FOGLs in a show of somewhat spontaneous solidarity.  It was quite a sight!

End of free swimming for over 60s…but here’s an offer

As we probably all know, one of the immediate casualties of the tightening of government spending is the closure at the end of the month of the free swimming programme for the over 60s around the country, which of course affects the Lido.

However, Spectrum management have announced that the over 60s can swim at a concessionary rate of £2.90 or take advantage of a new reduced price season ticket for the remainder of the Lido swimming season at a cost of only £17.50.

More details can be found at www.guildfordlido.co.uk

Enjoying the Lido this summer?

If yes, then why not join us (the Friends of Guildford Lido) as a member.  It’s totally FREE, all you need to do is go to the Become a Member page on the right, and email us letting us know you want to become a FOGL. You’ll get regular emails and newsletters during the season and we’ll stay in touch over the closed season with you, telling you what’s going on behind the scenes.

This year is the last season that will be run under the current arrangements, from next season, new contractors will be in place. We hope to continue the good relationships we have developed over the past year and play a key role in developing the Lido so that we can all enjoy it to its best potential. So let us know what you’d like to see by joining us NOW.

Swim Events

We know that several FOGLs have been taking part in various organised swimming events this season. We’ve heard from those using the Lido to train for the British Gas Great London and Great East Swims and the inaugural Blue Mile in Plymouth for example.  We hope to share some of their experiences in the newsletters and would love to hear from more how they are using and enjoying the Lido this season. It’s great to hear how the Lido plays such an important role in helping people to train for and enjoy their outdoor swimming, for example this from new FOGL Hilary:

“ I have been using the Lido since the beginning of May to train for the British Gas Swim last weekend and it was a godsend as I needed the extra distance and outdoors, having only been used to an indoor and 25m pool”.

Do get in touch, post a comment here or email us direct, all news is very welcome!

Have you told us what you think?

This time next year, as you may or may not be aware, the Lido will be run under a new contractor. We want to play our part in making this change a positive one for the Lido and we’ve been invited to contribute FOGLs ideas on service levels.

We’ve heard from many members over the past year following our re-establishment but if you’ve yet to get in touch to tell us what you’d like to see, or haven’t yet signed up as a FOGL member (membership is entirely FREE), please do so NOW!

Email us at friends@guildfordlido.com to become a member, or share your thoughts.

By joining us, you show your support for what we know is a fantastic facility that is loved by many, one we want to help to make even more fab! We will send you regular newsletters and keep you up to date with developments and news over the coming months.

Hot weekend ahead

The forecast is looking perfect for the weekend and we want everyone to come along and enjoy the Lido to its max.  For those liking a quieter swim than we get on hot busy days, remember that on Friday and Monday mornings the pool’s open from 6.30am – 9am.  Get up early, enjoy the Lido’s perfect waters before the crowds flock in and head off to work.

On Saturday and Sunday the pool will be open 10am-6.30pm.  The carpark is likely to be very busy, so why not consider coming by train or park up at Spectrum and saunter down to the Lido.  Both are within easy walking distance of the pool.

However and whenever you visit the Lido, we hope you have a wonderful, sunny, swimming time.

BBQ cancelled

Unfortunately the decision has been made to cancel the BBQ due to a low number of ticket sales.  This is disappointing, however, thanks to those who did support the event, and of course refunds for your tickets are available from Lido reception.

Timetable changes

Due to school bookings, please be aware of the following changes to the timetable:

Friday 9th July, Early Morning Swimming will run from 6.30am – 8.00am and Public Swimming will be available from 12.00pm – 6.30pm.

Wednesday 14th July, Public Swimming will be available from 12.30pm – 6.30pm

Wednesday 21st July, Lane Swimming will run from 8.00am – 9.30am and Public Swimming will be available from 12.30pm – 6.30pm.

Govt end free swimming

Last week the government announced that the free swimming programme for the over 6o’s that the previous government introduced, will end in July, not as was widely anticipated, March 2011.  As soon as FOGL have further information as to how this will affect Lido swimmers who have benefited thus far from this scheme, over the remainder of the season we will post it here. For now, this information can be found on the Guildford Lido website (www.guildfordlido.co.uk)

“The new Coalition Government have announced that from 31st July 2010 the central government funding of free swimming for the over 60’s will cease. Council’s will be asked to pay back a proportion of their grants and operators will revert back to concessionary charging from August onwards.  We are looking into the subject in detail and will be able to update customers in due course. The original funding was to be reviewed at the end of March 2011 however the new government in an attempt to reduce the current deficit have decided to pull the funding”.

Surrey in Summer

Some lovely pictures have been posted on our Facebook group showing people enjoying their Surrey summers in the 1930s and ’40s. Picture no. 5 shows two ladies in the sun at the Lido.
